Hello, Linux newsletter readers. You know what this is, so here's the
news in free and open source software, as seen on the O'Reilly Network.
It's easy to set up a working Unix firewall (if you followed Dru Lavigne's
recent advice). A firewall by itself isn't all that interesting; it's
likely that you have multiple computers somewhere that should access the
Internet through a protected connection. In the latest FreeBSD Basics
installment, Dru Lavigne walks through NAT configuration, which allows
your internet-connected firewall to share that connection with multiple
other computers. Safety and community are a nice combination.

Python's upcoming WSGI standard allows all of the frameworks in Python to
interoperate. It also encourages the development of middleware--small
pieces of code that add features to frameworks, such as debugging,
authentication, and caching. James Gardner explains further how this all
works together:

In weblogs this week, Jonathan Wellons reported a colleague as saying that
web development is "trivial":
http://www.oreillynet.com/onlamp/blog/2006/10/web_development_is_trivial_rig.html
Jeremy Jones found an interesting rant about how learning Python and
Haskell can make day-job programming frustrating:
http://www.oreillynet.com/onlamp/blog/2006/10/python_and_haskell_make_you_a.html
... then reported another opinion that design patterns expose weaknesses
in programming languages:

Your editor postulated the most important reason why bugs clump together:

... and asked challenge-response mail-system users to filter his junk mail
by telephone:

Andy Oram characterized new media emerging in the Internet age:

Ann Barcomb summarized the week in Perl 6:

pat elyer posted one fascinating interview question with Robert Glass:
http://www.oreillynet.com/ruby/blog/2006/10/interviewing_the_audience.html
Tom Adelstein recommended that Linux administrators earn their MCSE
certifications:
http://www.oreillynet.com/sysadmin/blog/2006/10/linux_mac_andor_windows_and_wh.html
Tim O'Reilly remarked that visualizations of Wikipedia change logs and
genetic variations among individuals showed interesting similarities:
http://radar.oreilly.com/archives/2006/10/wikipedia_and_genomics_visuali.html
Brady Forrest offered thoughts on running an unconference:
http://radar.oreilly.com/archives/2006/10/thoughts_on_unconferences.html
Nat Torkington geeked out over O'Reilly appearances in a Weird Al video
and The IT Crowd television show:
http://radar.oreilly.com/archives/2006/10/you_cant_buy_publicity_like_th.html
Marc Hedlund called for more VCs with low expectations:
http://radar.oreilly.com/archives/2006/10/vcs_with_low_expectations.html
At least he can get VCs to call,
